How can I maintain healthy teeth?

Our teeth have such an important role to play in our lives. They help us chew and digest food, they help us to talk and speak clearly and they also give our face its shape. Good oral and dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease—and can help you keep your teeth as you get older.

At Heath Street Dental, we believe in always aiming to preserve the teeth and extend the longevity of tooth tissue. Here are our tips on maintaining healthy teeth!

Tip 1: Brush at least twice a day. The best time to brush teeth is after meals. We recommend using a small soft toothbrush-something that has better access to the back teeth and gentle on the gums.

Tip 2: Use fluoridated toothpaste. Fluoride helps to harden tooth enamel and reduces your risk of decay.

  • Children under 3 years old should brush twice daily, with a smear of toothpaste containing at least 1,000ppm fluoride.
  • Children between 3 and 6 years old should brush at least twice daily with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste containing more than 1,000ppm fluoride.
  • Adults should brush at least twice daily with a toothpaste containing 1,350-1,500ppm fluoride.

Tip 3: Limit acidic drinks like soft drinks, cordials and fruit juices. Food acids soften tooth material and dissolve the minerals in tooth enamel, causing holes (cavities or caries).

Tip 4: See your dentist for regular check-ups. You should also visit your dentist if you have a dental problem such as a toothache or bleeding gums.
